Room choice is crucial
Our choice of accommodation in the USA usually hinges round "do they take dogs?" as we have a 4 year old Lab who is the most laid back and quiet thing on 4 feet. We don't mind paying a reasonable extra fee for him - a few bucks a night - because we recognize that while he has never ever made any kind of mess of anything, accidents can happen and the hotel has to cover the costs of fixing those.
