If you’re seeking quiet charm on Florida’s Gulf Coast, consider a stay at the Gulf Breeze Cottages on Sanibel Island. My husband and I spent two nights at the small property last week, and it was absolutely perfect for the type of beach stay we were looking for: laid-back, comfortable, convenient and serene.

Here’s why we loved the Gulf Breeze Cottages so much:

This two-bedroom cottage directly faces the Gulf.

Quintessential Florida Beach Cottages: Accommodations at the Gulf Breeze Cottages are in small clapboard buildings with baby-blue and light-pink trim and they ooze beachy goodness. Decor inside features pastel beach scenes on the walls, white wicker furniture, and bedspreads in tropical prints. Our one-bedroom cottage (#3) was perfect for the two of us, with a queen-size bed, small-ish bathroom, full kitchen (refrigerator, microwave, stove, coffeemaker and all the utensils you’d need to cook a meal). In the sunporch entryway was a single bed ideal for a third small guest (aka a child). In the morning, I enjoyed coffee on the front porch with a table and chairs, and there was also a back porch which faced other cottages and a little courtyard with chaise lounges.

Affordable Prices: In the off season, May through mid-December, a stay at Gulf Breeze Cottages is incredibly affordable. Right now, rates start at $150/night for an efficiency (a special going on through October cuts that by up to 20 percent). Even the Gulf-front two-bedroom cottage, which is the biggest lodging option directly facing the water, is $280/night. Split that among two couples, and it’s a screaming deal.

Friendly Folks: I’ve found time and time again that the service I receive, whether it’s at a hotel or restaurant, can make or break a travel experience. Here, I very much appreciated meeting Sandy and Charley, owners of the Gulf Breeze Cottages, who answered my many questions about what to do and where to eat on Sanibel. Need some extra coffee? No problem! Want your towels washed daily, instead of picked up every other day? Of course.

Smiling and sweet Sandy also put up with my gentle ribbing about the VCR in our cottage — who has a VCR anymore?! She noted that gradually all the cottages will all have flat-screen TVs and DVD players (like the two Gulf-front accommodations), but in the meantime, guests can take a walk down memory lane and borrow from the library of VCR tapes in the front office — and there is quite a collection. A paperback book exchange library is in the front office as well — with a loose “leave a book take a book” policy.

Thoughtful Amenities: Sanibel Island is made for cyclists, with paved bike paths weaving throughout the island. Guests of the Gulf Breeze Cottages can rent bikes hourly on-site. (Though, if you want newer beach cruisers and plan on using them often during a week-long stay, you might check out the larger fleet at nearby Billy’s Rental’s.) I appreciated having a bucket of water already placed at my cottage’s front door when we checked in (for rinsing sandy feet). Though we didn’t use the outdoor clothesline (another throwback!), it’s there to dry wet beach towels.

Other nice amenities: a coin-operated laundry, outdoor grills for barbecuing, plus a handy outdoor station for washing shells that you find on the beach (so you don’t plug up the cottage’s plumbing with sand). There are plenty of beach chairs and lounges on hand to set on the grassy lawn or on the beach.

Endless strolling and shelling opportunities along the beach right in front of the Gulf Breeze Cottages.

Location, Location, Location: The Gulf Breeze Cottages property is on the southeast side of Sanibel Island. Cottages are steps away from a mighty long strip of Sanibel’s white sand and its plethora of shells (it’s one of the world’s top three shelling locations — they’re eveywhere!). From the Gulf Breeze Cottages it’s an easy bike ride to ice cream shops and restaurants, plus the Sanibel Lighthouse on the eastern tip is about a 20-minute bike ride away (depending on how leisurely you’re cycling, that is). We didn’t hear any car traffic, nor did we have noisy neighbors during our stay. It was delightfully quiet on property, with no one ever bothering us or interrupting our time together — making our visit to Gulf Breeze Cottages wonderfully romantic and peaceful.
