From Nancy D. Brown of What a Trip
SOPHISTICATED ANCHORAGE
Since my last stay in Anchorage, six years ago, this borough has morphed into a sophisticated city. There are plenty of things to see and do in Anchorage, such as the First Friday Art Walk or a visit to the new Imaginarium Discovery Museum slated to open in the spring of 2010 at the Anchorage Museum.
Foodies will be delighted at the variety of dining option from the Snow City Cafe, to the hip Muse, housed in the Anchorage Museum or Orso restaurant. Humpy’s is the local hang out with good beer, while chocolate lovers will like the rich, hot, drinking chocolate at not one, but two Modern Dwellers.
IDITAROD RACE VIEWING
I stayed at the Sheraton Anchorage Hotel and Spa while I covered the 2010 Iditarod Sled Dog Race. My standard king room, #629, was $149 and featured the Sheraton’s Sweet Sleeper Bed, as well as feather and hypoallergenic pillows.
While guests are charged $9.99 per day for internet access, insiders know to sign up for the Starwood program to receive reward points, free internet and free parking. Unfortunately, I was never able to log on during my two night stay. After my third unsuccessful attempt, I was told by the front desk to call the hotel’s outside tech support. After a half hour of listening to music while on hold, I gave up.
Upon check out, I was told that many guests experienced similar problems or “challenges” as the Sheraton referred to this mis-step.
ICE SPA
If you have time for a spa treatment, the Ice Spa, located on the 15th floor, offers a couples massage room with an amazing view of the Chugach mountains. While the locking mechanism failed on the locker in the changing room, the 50 minute aromatherapy massage was very relaxing.
