The New England Outdoor Center, located in Millinocket Maine, recently received environmental leader certification from the State of Maine’s Environmental Leader program. This four-season resort made some of the following improvements to qualify for certification:
- New energy efficient heating and domestic hot water systems
- Use of compact fluorescent bulbs
- Recycling waste
- Installation of low-flow showerheads in guest rooms
This wonderful distinction is bestowed when resorts earn enough points. Points are awarded for various environmental and green practices, including using green detergents and reducing waste. To maintain the distinction year over year, the resort is required to earn more points than the prior year – so constantly improvement will occur.
In addition to the green certification, the New England Outdoor Center recently opened the Coveside Guest Houses at Twin Pine Camps. These six cabins meet the highest standards for certified clean air quality and are LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified.
Each Coveside Cabin offers radiant heat floors, three bedrooms (two single beds and three queen beds total), two bathrooms, a patio, a sunroom, a living room with a gas fireplace and flat screen television, a full kitchen, and a gas grill (so you can cook everything you need right in your cabin). There are plenty of outdoor activities available at the center, including kayaking, moose tours, wildlife photography, and fishing.
