Historic Gettysburg Hotel is within walking distance to many Gettyburg attractions

In Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the Gettysburg Hotel , a Best Western Plus establishment, pairs a pivotol point in American history with a modern day stay. First established as a tavern in 1797, the hotel expanded and was witness to the end of the Civil War in 1863. Abraham Lincoln crafted the Gettysburg Address at the David Wills House nearby.

Overlooking the battlefield

With 2011 marking the 200th anniversary of  the Civil War’s start, a stay in the midst of downtown Gettysburg has a certain appeal. The Gettysburg Hotel’s location puts it within walking distance of many of Gettysburg’s attractions and the battlefield.

When I browsed the hotel’s website, two packages caught my attention. You couldn’t have them anywhere but here. One, “The Civil War Experience” includes 2 nights and 3 days of Civil War history. A 2-day pass to the Museum and Visitors Center at Gettysburg National Military Park, the Gettysburg Cyclorama, a self-guided driving tour map, a copy of Gods and Generals: The Paintings of Mort Künstler, another hardback Civil War history book, and Civil War era food are included.

The 2nd package, “Memories of a President” centers on Dwight D. Eisenhower who used the Gettysburg Hotel as an operations center. A tour of Eisenhower’s farm, the David Wills Museum House where Lincoln wrote the Gettysburg Address, a keepsake box of notecards by artist Mort Künstler and a hardback copy of a biography of one of five presidents from the Pages of the Past bookstore are part of the deal.

Both packages also include buffet breakfast.

McClellan's Tavern is an English-style Pub

In between the times you’re soaking up Gettysburg history, enjoy the hotel. The Gettysburg Hotel has: 119 guest rooms, high speed internet, a fitness center, a roof top pool,  a grand ballroom that housed the Gettysburg National Bank in 1814, Centuries on the Square restaurant and McClellan’s Tavern, an English-style pub.
