The San Diego Skyline seen from the San Diego Bay

The San Diego Skyline seen from the San Diego Bay

Spring training is in full swing, and the San Diego Padres will be opening their season at PETCO Park on April 6, 2009.

The wonderful thing about PETCO Park is its location, situated right next to the Gaslamp Quarter. San Diego’s hip old neighborhood turned new is known for its restaurants and nightlife scene. This is the part of town I always avoided when growing up, yet the part of town I go to first when I visit there now.

The views from the park are hynotizing. In fact, the panoramic view of San Diego is so lovely that sometimes it’s hard to focus on the game. On the horizon, the San Diego Bay is a center of activity with boats and ships. Save a day to get out on the bay with a harbor cruise for an opportunity to see San Diego from a different vantage point. Several companies offer sunset cruises, lunch or dinner cruises, or just a simple tour.

Seaport Village, with its 50 shops and 17 eateries is an easy walk along the waterfront from the Gaslamp Quarter. And if you’re looking for a shopping mall with over one hundred stores anchored by Macy’s and Nordstrom, Westfield Horton Plaza downtown is a short walk away.

Both the Hilton and Marriott have Gaslamp Quarter hotels that are centrally located, and each offers special deals on a regular basis. Stay in the center of activity the next time you’re in San Diego by staying in the Gaslamp Quarter. Park your car and let it sit while you enjoy a walkable city. And while you’re there, catch a game with the Padres at PETCO Park.
