The Exterior of the Westin Kierland Resort

Westin’s Heavenly Bed, Heavenly Bath, and Heavenly Shower are already legendary among avid travelers.  But did you know that Westin is also a pioneer in kids’ programs.

I recently stayed at the Westin Kierland Resort in Scottsdale (right near Phoenix, Arizona), and was truly impressed at their innovative family initiatives.  The fun for kids starts immediately at the hotel entrance, where families are greeted and sent to the Mining Company, a check-in room where kids are welcomed.  Families can sign up for children’s programs right at the Mining Company (although popular programs do fill up in advance), and kids’ are offered a passport, where they can complete a “scavenger hunt” to get their passport stamped.  With each stamp, they’ll receive a pin for their special lanyard.

The Westin Kierland employs also a “Director of Fun” who coordinates all programs for leisure travelers (not just kids!).  I had the opportunity to peek in on one of the most popular programs – a kids’ cooking school where kids of all ages go into the kitchen to decorate and create cookies.  Apparently, this program fills up months in advance, so if you are interested in having your kids participate, call well in advance.  The hotel also offers an evening dessert bar, as well as s’mores making during the weekends.
