Last year, my family and I went to the fabulous Whiteface Lodge in Lake Placid, NY (right in the heart of the Adirondacks). While we loved the resort (and are considering visiting again this year), my kids’ favorite part of the trip was the complimentary Kamp Kanu program (my son lives in his Kamp Kanu tee shirt). This year, the Whiteface Lodge has announced the the complimentary Kamp Kanu program has been expanded to provide interesting and creative activities for young tweens and teens, ages 11 to 14.
Originally, I wasn’t sure how my kids (then 3 and 4) would feel about being apart from us for a few hours a day. But, they were immediately comforted by the wonderful, CPR and first aid trained staff, and just waved bye to us. In those few hours, they took nature walks, did crafts, and learned about the Adirondacks. Older kids learn how to make campfires, read trail maps, follow a compass, and do other fun outdoor activities.
Kamp Kanu is offered everyday throughout the year. For children ages three to six, the program is available half-day, while older kids, ages seven through ten, may select a half-day morning or afternoon (1:00pm – 3:30pm) program or a full day session (9:30am to 3:30pm). For participants ages 11 to 14, Kamp Kanu is offered full day, from 9:30am-4:00pm. (A small fee is charged for the Kamp Kanu lunch, but the rest of the camp is free). Field trips are also offered on select days.
