The Crystal Pier Hotel is as close to the beach as you can get. In fact, it’s over the water.
Built directly on the pier in Pacific Beach, San Diego, the Crystal Pier Hotel has been an icon in San Diego ever since I can remember. These small cottages were built in 1936, and even before they were renovated it was a treat staying there. It’s one of the few places along the beaches of San Diego where parking isn’t an issue. Just drive right onto the pier and park in front of your cottage.
From your deck, high above the surf, you can sunbathe while being entertained by surfers below you. Each cottage has a fully equipped kitchen and comfortable livingroom. It’s like having your own little beach house. At night the sound of the waves pounding below you will surely lull you to sleep.
Settle in for a full week. There’s so much to see and do in San Diego that a few days won’t be enough. Visit the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Seaworld, and Downtown San Diego, where the Gaslamp District has completely revived a dying old town.
Along the boardwalk there are several places to rent bicycles and roller blades for exploring miles of boardwalk along the beach and bay. Try the rickety old roller coaster at Belmont Park, but only if your neck and back can tolerate it.

Take a surfing lesson while you’re there, or rent a Boogie Board and ride the waves on your belly. But wear lots of sunscreen. You’ll be having so much fun in the sun that you won’t realize you’re getting burned.
Off season is the perfect time to go because the weather’s usually good in San Diego and you won’t have to fight the summer crowds.
There’s a three night minimum stay during the summer season, two night minimum during the winter, and a four night minimum stay during major holidays. This place is popular! Reservations for the summer should be made 8-11 months in advance, and 4-6 months in advance for the winter.
