Less than an hour from Key West, Florida, Bahia Honda State Park is one of the state’s best — if not the best — beach campgrounds. Think Corona-commercial beautiful: long stretches of white sand, the lull of waves and endless turquoise water. This is the perfect family-friendly setting for snorkeling, kayaking, fishing, making sand castles or just playing in the water.
Wildlife that you might spot from shore includes West Indian manatees, dolphins, sea turtles, hermit crabs, iguanas, Key deer, raccoons and tree frogs. The shallow waters are great for snorkelers of all ages. Look for gray angelfish, hogfish and stingrays — but remember to not touch the wildlife.
Even better, if you want a little civilization mixed in with your nature, head to Key West to visit the Ernest Hemingway House and Museum, then stop by the Blond Giraffe for a slice of key lime pie (you can also try the version that’s frozen, dipped in chocolate and on a stick).
Camp sites are $31.49 per night. Cabins are available for those who like a little less roughing when roughing it. The park has a boat ramp and also rents water sports equipment. Call 305-872-2353 for more details.
Thanks to stannate for the beautiful beach photo.

I have driven by signs for this park many times but, to my knowledge, have never visited. I guess I need another long trip down the keys.
